Have you always been curious about what’s under home plate? Well, just in case you have been, I’ll show you what I put under them. Home plate is really just a slab of rubber about one inch thick. If you just drop it on the ground, it will move around. If you bury it one inch deep so that its surface is flush with the surrounding dirt, it will still eventually move around. What i do is build a block, three layers high, in the shape of home plate made from pressure treated lumber. The bottom most layer has “wings” that fan out wider than the rest of the block. The wings add stability when the whole block gets buried.
Next, I put the rubber home plate on top of the block, and I glue it down securely with Liquid Nails exterior construction adhesive. The final step is to bury the whole unit in the proper spot on the field to a depth where the home plate surface is flush with the surrounding ground. The home plate in these photos will be installed at the Brookmeadow field this year shortly after Thanksgiving.
